Foundations Continuing Education Units and Professional Development

This Activity supported the development of a .5 Continuing Education Unit course that provides an orientation to our state’s recently revised early learning and development standards for children ages birth to five (North Carolina Foundations for Early Learning and Development). This course introduces early care and education (ECE) teachers across the state to the  standards and helps them understand how to use them to guide and improve their developmentally appropriate teaching practices.

Child Care Resources Inc. was responsible for the development and delivery of:

  • a .5 CEU course curriculum and trainer’s guide on the revised Foundations;
  • three train-the-trainers sessions (for trainers from each of the 14 regional lead child care resource and referral agencies and other cross ECE sector trainers);
  • four 2-day intensive institutes about how to incorporate the revised Foundations into college level coursework and technical assistance services for higher education faculty, CCR&R  and cross–early learning and development sector technical assistance practitioners; and
  • a guide on how to embed the revised Foundations into college coursework and early learning and development technical assistance best practices.

An on-line platform for the course was developed to make it easily accessible statewide and to ensure sustainability.

This Activity was completed December 2015. Work will continue through 2016 to develop an intermediate course on Foundations, an advanced course on Foundations focused on social and emotional development and family engagement, and to convert Foundations into eBook format.
